But from earliest times the fishery developed in two modes, that of the wet fishery and that of the dry. The former was carried on from ships on the Banks where the fish were taken, cleaned and heavily salted on board. In this "wet" or ship or banks fishery, there was little resort to the shores of Newfoundland.
